Aspects of Love @ Southwark Playhouse

Myös Seeing Is Believing, Everybody Loves A Hero, There Is More to Love, Hand Me The Wine and The Dice ja Anything But Lonely ovat loistavia biisejä, ja näyttelijät saavat niistä kaiken irti, kyllä on hienoa kuunnella tunteita täynnä olevaa, taitavaa laulua.

Felix Mosse Alexin roolissa on upea, hänen läsnäolonsa lavalla, kaikki ilmeet, eleet, äänenpainot, pienet yksityiskohdat, kaikki tekeminen lavalla on luontevaa ja uskottavaa.

Kelly Price Rosen roolissa ihastutti varsinkin todella kauniilla lauluäänellään.

Madalena Alberto on oikein loistava Giuliettana, samoin Minal Patel Marcelina, Rosen teatteriseurueen johtajana.

Lavastus on ihastuttavan ajanmukaista (tämä siis sijoittuu vuosiin 1947-1964), näppärää, toimivaa ja silmiä hivelevää, puvustus samaten. Koreografia on nappisuoritus, ja voisin katsoa Hand Me The Wine and The Dicen tanssikohtauksen aika monta kertaa, ennen kuin kyllästyisin siihen.

Todella hieno.

So this is what it means when everything just falls in the right place! I had no idea what this thing called Aspects of Love is when I booked a ticket to go and see it. I wanted to see a matinee on the day I went to see this, and Aspects of Love was the only thing that sounded a little interesting. I did know that it had music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and I like his other musicals, so I thought it would be nice to see this one too. I went to Southwark Playhouse excited, but not quite sure what to expect. But I was really looking forward to find out what the story is about.

A young man named Alex (Felix Mosse) has fallen in love with an actress Rose Vibert (Kelly Price), and he asks her to come with him to his villa (though it's actually his uncle's house). Alex and Rose have a great time until Alex's uncle George (Jerome Pradon) comes to the house and meets Rose. Alex is a little too young and a little too boyish, and Rose likes George's more mature company. However, Rose and Alex still spend all their time together before Rose leaves to go back to the theatre and Alex goes to the army. Two years later Alex returns to his uncle's house and Rose is there too. Alex is shocked, of course, as his uncle and the woman he loved (and still loves) are now together. Rose tells Alex she loves George, and when Alex can't get her back, he leaves the house. Rose and George get married and are having a child, and Alex hears the news in a military camp. Years go by and twelve years later Alex is in the audience when Rose performs. After the show Rose invites Alex to George's house and Alex meets his cousin Jenny (Eleanor Walsh). Two years pass and George, Alex, Rose and Jenny are at the villa. Jenny and Alex are too close by now, Jenny has a crush on Alex and even though Alex is trying to keep his young cousin away, he can't deny that there is something between them. Rose and George make it very clear that Alex has no right to encourage Jenny's feelings. Finally also George's friend Giulietta (Madalena Alberto) meets Alex, they have both heard a lot about each other but it takes many years before they are in the same place at the same time. A lot happens after that and many hearts broke before the show ends.

I did not expect this show to be the one to replace Doctor Zhivago as my all time favorite musical. Many shows have come close, but none of them have ever been that close that they would actually make it to be my favorite, but this one did it. And I had no idea that Aspects of Love would be this good, this beautiful, this stunning. In my eyes, this production is as close to perfect as it's possible to get. If this show would be running in some theatre here in Finland, I'm more than sure I would be seeing it many times, like ten or something. I don't really know what to write about something I liked this much, but I'll try to get some of my thoughts written.

Aspects of Love has really beautiful, strong, funny and emotional music that flows through the show and follows the story in a perfect way. I did know Love Changes Everything is the most famous song of this show, but I hadn't heard it before. It is a really great song and my favourite of these songs. I also loved Seeing Is BelievingEverybody Loves A HeroThere Is More to LoveHand Me The Wine and The Dice and Anything But Lonely, and with the cast being so good at singing, it was a pleasure to listen.

Felix Mosse is amazing as Alex. He really brings the character alive, everything Alex feels or thinks is clear to the audience and every gesture, movement, smile and all the little details Mosse brings to the character make his performance feel real and true. Mosse grows Alex from a boy to a man, and it's a great experience to watch Alex's journey. Mosse has one of the best moments of the show in the beginning, his Love Changes Everything is an excellent way to start the show and he has a great voice full of emotion. Kelly Price has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard and it's such a treat to listen to her, especially Anything But Lonely gave me chills. Price is also brilliant as Rose, she brings something new to the character every time she is on stage and Rose seems like a real person, audience gets to know her during the story and everything that happens to her has an effect to the people watching the show.

Jerome Pradon is a funny, warm and nice George, Pradon is great on stage and it's amazing to see how he brings his character to life. George is still heartbroken after losing his first wife and Giulietta, Rose and later Jenny are the ones to bring joy and happiness to his life. Pradon shows George's aging in a credible way, he brings so many good details and things to the character that George's story is one of the most interesting things of the show. Eleanor Walsh is charming as Jenny, she's very vivid and wonderful on stage. Walsh is great as a young girl but also as the teenager Jenny grows to be, she shows how much Jenny likes Alex and how she knows that Alex likes her too, even though he tries to keep Jenny away. Jenny is very strong-minded and smart, and Walsh does superb job portraying the character.

Let's mention a few more... Jason Kajdi as Hugo, Rose's admirer, is a really good role, and Kajdi has great moments on stage outside Hugo's role, he has many smaller parts and especially Kajdi's dancing is brilliant. Madalena Alberto is lovely as Giulietta, she brings a witty and warm vibe to the character and she has a great voice as well. Minal Patel does a good job as Marcel, an actor manager, who seems to be there every time Rose needs him. The whole cast is super talented and they deliver a phenomenal performance.

Set and costume design (Jason Denvir) is beautiful, works well and fits the time the show is set (from 1947 to 1964). Choreography (Sam Spencer-Lane) is spot on, and I could watch the choreography of Hand Me The Wine and The Dice pretty many times before I'd be bored of it (if that's even possible). Jonathan O'Boyle's direction is smart, sharp and clear, he has brought the story to the stage in a way that makes the audience feel all kind of emotions and makes people fall in love with the show. O'Boyle has done amazing job, he has made so many beautiful and sensitive choices that make the show feel very real, and he has also brought strong and unpleasant feelings on stage, showing the whole range of things human life has to offer. I changed from the second row to the front row after the interval and a few times I did think someone will hit me with a chair or kick me in the face during the fast dance scenes. Luckily that didn't happen and it was awesome to sit so close to the stage, I love to see all the smiles, tears, angry faces, happy faces and all the emotions changing on people's faces and from the front row (and also from the second row) I had a great view to the stage. Southwark Playhouse is such a nice place, and I loved the fact that the audience is so close to the stage, from where I was sitting the distance between me and the performers was something from a few meters to ten inches.

Aspects of Love was just so beautiful and powerful that I loved it from the first seconds. I hope to see this show again on some other stage (of course I would love to see this production again, but it ends too fast for me) and the sooner the better. If anyone is even slightly interested to see what this thing is, I recommend it with all my heart. Aspects of Love closes in Southwark Playhouse on 9th of February so go before that. This production is magical, I think this is what theatre really is all about. This is a phenomenal production of a great musical, and I'm so so happy I decided to go and see this. And I really did not think this one would be my new favorite musical, but that's the coolest part - you never know when the theatre magic hits you.

Thank you all, it was a joy to see this.
