Näin Companyn Lontoossa 11.10.

Syy siihen, miksi halusin mennä katsomaan tämän, oli Jamien roolissa nähtävä  Jonathan Bailey. Netflixissä on nimittäin Crashing-niminen brittisarja, josta jäi erityisesti mieleen juuri Baileyn roolisuoritus.

Musiikki oli siis oikeinkin mainiota, erityisesti Company, You Could Drive A Person Crazy, Someone Is Waiting, Another Hundred People, Getting Married Today, The Ladies Who Lunch ja Being Alive olivat hyviä biisejä, ja varsinkin se koko kohtaus, jossa Getting Married Today-biisi on, on mahtava.

Bobbien poikaystävää Andyä näyttelevä Richard Fleeshman on ihastuttava!

Patti LuPone on varsinkin Ladies Who Lunch-biisissä loistava, mutta hänen hahmonsa Joanne vie huomion aina lavalla ollessaan.

I saw Company at Gielgud Theatre on 11th of October.

The reason I wanted to see the show was Jonathan Bailey who plays Jamie in this production. I had seen him on Crashing (British drama comedy series from 2016) which is on Finnish Netflix and which I liked a lot. And the thing I really liked was Bailey's role as Sam, so as soon as I heard he was going to be on stage in London, I decided to go and see Company even though I didn't know anything about it. Well, I did know that there was a gender swap, Bobby was no longer a man but a woman named Bobbie. But as I had not seen the show before I had nothing to compare this new production with. And now it will be fun to see the show again some day with the way that it has usually been done, with Bobby and with all the other characters as they have originally been written and the songs like they have originally been performed. But I think I will prefer this adaptation, it was really good and I liked it so much.

It's Bobbie's (Rosalie Craig) 35th birthday and her friends are celebrating that with her. All Bobbie's friends are couples, either married or soon to be married, and they begin to wonder why Bobbie is not married or starting a family. Bobbie starts to think that maybe she could possibly want to get married. The couples are Jamie (Jonathan Bailey) and Paul (Alex Gaumond), Joanne (Patti LuPone) and Larry (Ben Lewis), Susan (Daisy Maywood) and Peter (Ashley Campbell), David (Richard Henders) and Jenny (Jennifer Saayeng) and Sarah (Mel Giedroyc) and Harry (Gavin Spokes). And then there are Bobbie's three boyfriends, PJ (George Blagden), Andy (Richard Fleeshman) and Theo (Matthew Seadon-Young).

This was so much fun! It did say "a musical comedy" on the programme cover but I didn't expect that Company would fit my sense of humor so well. It had so many good jokes, funny things and warm humor that I fell in love with the show right away. If there had been troubles to modify the roles for this new production, it didn't show at all. I couldn't tell that there had never been a woman protagonist before because everything worked better than well. I liked the way the stage looked and for example those rooms with gloving edges were really clever choice of set design. The show feels really real, every character has characteristics that any person could have and everything feels like it could happen in the world outside of theatre. The atmosphere in the theatre was positive and happy, the musical totally took me inside it's world and I didn't think about anything else during the show. It was amazing to see a show that I liked this much, especially because I didn't know what would be happening on stage or what kind of story this was. All in all, Company was very pleasant surprise.

Every single cast member does brilliant job and they have great moments on stage. Let's mention a few performances from the show. Of course the role I was most looking forward to was Jonathan Bailey as Jamie. And he was so good (didn't expect anything less)! Jamie seems to be a funny, kind, nice and friendly guy, who's just about to get married. Bailey does the role with a great touch and it's a joy to watch him on stage. And Getting Married Today is one of the best moments and songs on the show and Bailey gets a big, well deserved round of applause after the song. Rosalie Craig is charming and funny as Bobbie, and she's got a good stage charisma. Her singing is flawless and her acting is excellent. Craig takes the little details and small gestures that Bobbie has and uses them in a great way. Richard Fleeshman as Andy is so lovely and delightful! Andy is a little dumb and naive but such a sweet guy throughout the whole show. And I love the moment when Andy tells Bobbie about the time he got a cocoon for a gift and how he waited for it to become a butterfly and was worried that the cat might got the butterfly and do something to it.

Jennifer Saayeng and Richard Henders do a really good job as Jenny and David, and George Blagden playing PJ and Matthew Seadon-Young playing Theo are both really good too. Patti LuPone is great on stage and especially during the song Ladies Who Lunch and also on The Little Things You Do Together. LuPone's character Joanne really catches the audience's attention whenever she's on stage. Mel Giedroyc is a refreshing Sarah and she has just the right approach to the role. And Alex Gaumond is great as Jamie's fiancé Paul, who is really eager to get married and totally in love with Jamie. Overall, Company has a really good cast and everyone is talented and great to watch on stage.

The music by Stephen Sondheim is really good (this is, by the way, the only musical I had never heard a single song from before going to see it) and it got stuck to my head. I really hope there will be cast recording from this production because it's not the same thing to listen to these songs being performed by the other casts in other productions. I loved all the songs Bobbie sings and would love to hear them again performed by a woman instead of a man (I have been listening to the original Broadway soundtrack after seeing the show but it's not exactly the same thing even though the song are the same). But anyway, my favorite songs are CompanyYou Could Drive A Person CrazySomeone Is WaitingAnother Hundred PeopleGetting Married TodayThe Ladies Who Lunch and Being Alive.

So, Company was a musical that really fits my taste. It's funny, clever, feels real, has likable and interesting characters and great music. This production is fresh and joyful, splendidly directed by Marianne Elliott and performed with talent and great energy by the brilliant cast. It's booking until March 30th so if you're in London before that, I recommend to go and see Company. It's great and I'm so happy I decided to go, because even though I had no idea what the show is about I ended up laughing through the whole show and having the best time. And that's why I love theatre and musicals. You never know what's going to happen on stage, but usually it's something amazing.

Thank you all for the show, loved every second of it!
