Kinky Boots tulee syksyllä Suomeen, joten se oli nähtävä vielä ennen sitä Lontoossa. Ja esitys muuten loppuukin Lontoossa 12. tammikuuta 2019 yli 1400:n esityksen jälkeen, eli jos meinaa vielä nähdä brittiversion niin on parempi mennä ennen sitä.
Charlie (Oliver Tompsett) perii isältään huonossa jamassa olevan kenkätehtaan ja miettii, että mitäs sille tekisi. Charlie törmää drag queen Lolaan (Simon-Anthony Rhoden), jolta hän saa idean. Miehillehän ei tehdä kestäviä korkokenkiä.... Jospa Charlien kenkätehdas alkaisi valmistaa niitä? Lolan vahva persoona ei kaikkia hurmaa, esimerkiksi Don (Sean Needham) ei tästä paljoa perusta. Charlielle aiheuttaa tehtaan lisäksi stressiä myös naimisiin halajava tyttöystävä Nicola (Cordelia Farnworth), jonka kanssa pitäisi häitä suunnitella. Kenkätehtaalla työskentelevä Lauren (Natalie McQueen) taas huomaa, että Charlie ei ehkä olekaan niin tylsä ja ujo tyyppi kuin hän on luullut, vaan itse asiassa aika valloittava. Harmi vaan, että Nicola pyörii kuvioissa. Nähdäänpä lavalla myös nyrkkeilymatsi, muotinäytös, voltti korkokengillä ja liukuhihnoilla juoksentelua.
Rakastan Kinky Bootsin biisejä, olen kuunnellut niitä nyt pitkin tätä vuotta ja tykästynyt erityisesti Take What You Got, Land of Lola, Step One, The History of Wrong Guys, What A Woman Wants, In This Corner, Soul of A Man ja Hold Me In You Heart-biiseihin (siinähän olivat melkein kaikki musikaalin kappaleet, hupsis). Nyt kun esityksen on ensin nähnyt alkuperäiskielellä ja sen näkee vasta sen jälkeen suomeksi, tekstien käännöksiä odottaa ihan eri tavalla kuin silloin, jos alkuperäiskappaleet on kuullut vain Spotifysta tai levyltä. Muutenkin odotan Suomiversiota nyt samaan aikaan innoissani ja vähän huolissani myös - kun Lontoossa tämä on säkenöivä, loistelias ja täynnä taitoa, iloa ja tunnelmaa, niin välittyykö oikeanlainen meno ja meininki myös suomalaiselle näyttämölle (ja katsomoon, Lontoossahan aina kovasti hurrataan ja tunnelmoidaan ja eletään mukana)? Syksyllähän se nähdään, mutta uskon, että tämä sopii hienosti suomalaiselle teatterikentälle ja -yleisölle.
Mutta se Lontoon esitys! Vieläkin parempi kuin odotin, hauska, koskettava, vauhdikas, tyylikäs ja yllättävä. Glitteriä ja kimallusta, mutta myös arkista aherrusta kenkätehtaalla ja huolta sen tulevaisuudesta. Hahmot ovat tosi hyviä, heillä on sopivasti taustatarinaa ja heidän tekemänsä valinnat ja päätökset on helppo ymmärtää, kukaan ei vaikuta siltä, että hänet on kirjoitettu tarinaan vain täytteeksi. Lavastus on hieno, kenkätehdas on aidon näköinen, Lolan drag-esitysten lavalla kimaltaa ja nyrkkeilykehässä vallitsee odottava tunnelma. Puvustus on onnistunut, tarinan varrelle mahtuu niin tehdastyöläisten arkivaatteita, Lolan häikäisevän kauniita mekkoja, drag enkeleiden tyylikkäitä asuja sekä totta kai toinen toistaan korkeampia korkoja ja ne punaiset saappaat.
Oliver Tompsett on loistava Charlie (vaikka odotinkin näkeväni roolissa understudy Jordan Foxin, joka esiintyi siinä roolissa West End Livessä aiemmin samana päivänä). Hänellä on rooliin hyvä ote, joka kantaa koko esityksen ajan, eikä Charliesta voi olla pitämättä. Nuorena kenkätehtaan maisemista Lontooseen karannut poika palaa takaisin Northamptoniin, menneisyyteensä pariin, kun tehdas tulee hänen omistukseensa. Siinähän on sitten tehtävää, kun kenkien teko ei kannata, tehtaan väki on kuin perhettä ja pitäisi keksiä jotain, millä pelastaa tehtaan tulevaisuus. Tompsettin Charlie on mukava tyyppi, joka osaa toimia oikein, vaikka ei ehkä tiedäkään, mitä pitäisi tehdä. Tompsett myös laulaa hienosti. Simon-Anthony Rhodenin Lola on hurmaava, Rhoden tekee Lolasta vahvan ja itsevarman esiintyjän, sanavalmiin tyypin, jolle ei kannata naljailla, koska hän osaa kyllä sanoa vastaan. Toisaalta Lola kuitenkin epäröi, hän ei ole aina varma itsestään vaan jää toisten jalkoihin. Miksei aina voi olla vahva? Rhoden osaa tuoda Lolasta esiin sekä Lolan että Simonin.
Natalie McQueenin Lauren on aivan mahtava, ja The History of Wrong Guys-biisi, jota muuten odotin kovasti, on huikea. Lauren on iloinen ja rempseä tyyppi, ja hauska myös. Yksi suosikkihahmojani tässä. Sean Needham Donina on oikein hyvä, Don on järkähtämätön eikä anna mielipiteissään periksi, mutta joskus hänenkin täytyy taipua ja todeta, että kaikki uusi ei ole pahasta. Cordelia Farnworth on tosi hyvä Nicola, sopivan päättäväinen ja määrätietoinen, hän tietää mitä haluaa eikä anna siitä periksi. Jordan Fox oli West End Livessä hyvä Charlie, mutta nyt näin hänet siis Harryn roolissa, ja siinäkin häntä on ilo katsoa. Ja myös kuunnella, laulu kuulostaa hienolta.
Kinky Boots on hurmaava musikaali, tarina on hyvä ja kulkee sujuvasti, musiikki on mahtavaa ja esitys näyttää hienolta. Näyttelijät tekevät onnistuneet roolisuoritukset, laulavat ja tanssivat taitavasti ja tuovat hahmoistaan esiin tärkeimmät piirteet. Muutama rauhallisempi biisi vähän hidasti menoa ehkä liikaakin, mutta koska tämä etenee aika vauhdikkaasti, olisi esitys tuntunut luultavasti liialliselta koheltamiselta, jos ei oltaisi välillä painettu jarrua. Nyt kokonaisuus on hyvin kasassa, yleisö pysyy tunnelmassa mukana eikä huomio herpaannu hetkeksikään (ei edes silloin, kun esitys jouduttiin keskeyttämään hetkeksi jostain syystä, jota ei yleisölle kerrottu). Koreografiat ovat suurimmaksi osaksi tosi onnistuneita, porukka levittäytyy lavalla moneen suuntaan ja vauhtia riittää, ja kylläpä hienosti tanssitaan korkeissa koroissa! Minä kun en edes osaa niillä kunnolla kävellä. Tämä nosti kyllä odotukset korkealle syksyistä Helsingin ensi-iltaa varten, enpä malttaisi odottaa että näen tarinan suomeksi yhdessä suosikkiteattereistani.

I saw Kinky Boots at Adelphi Theatre 16th of June. And hey, it's closing 12th of January next year, so go see it before it's too late!
Kinky Boots is coming to Finland this August so I decided it would be nice to see it in London, in the original language before heading to see it in Helsinki later this year. Well, now I'm looking forward to the Finnish production but I'm also a little worried - the show was so amazing in London so is it going to be good in Finland too? We'll see that in August but I trust the cast and crew here at my home country. They are going to kill it!
Charlie (Oliver Tompsett) comes back to Northampton from London when his father dies and leaves his shoe factory to Charlie. The factory is not doing great and Charlie needs to think how he can save it. Luckily he runs into drag queen Lola (Simon-Anthony Rhoden) whose high heels aren't that good. That's how Charlie could save the factory - by making high heel boots for men! Lola's personality and charm doesn't appeal to everybody, for example Don (Sean Needham) who works at the shoe factory is not her fan. Charlie has his hands full not only with the factory but also with his girlfriend Nicola (Cordelia Farnworth). Nicola wants to plan their wedding and she's not happy to share Charlie with the factory world. Lauren (Natalie McQueen), in the other hand, is really happy that Charlie is back at the factory. He may not be that shy and boring as she tought, actually Charlie is pretty charming... Too bad Nicola is in the way.
I loved the show! I love the music, I have been listening to it for a few months and my favourite songs are Take What You Got, Land of Lola, Step One, The History of Wrong Guys, What A Woman Wants, In This Corner, Soul of A Man ja Hold Me In You Heart - so basically almost every one of them. Every song sounded really good, everyone on stage can really sing and also dance and act. A dream cast, I have to say. They work together well and the relationships and tensions and happy feelings between characters seem real and easy to believe. I like the story because it has elements of surprises, plot twists that aren't too easy for the spectators and also because it still has this warm feel throughout the whole show. It's easy to see why the characters make the decisions they make, but it doesn't feel like they make the choice everyone expects them to make. So, their choices feel right even though you may not expect them to make them.
Oliver Tompsett's Charlie is so nice, you can't help but like him. Charlie doesn't always know what he needs to do, but he still does the right thing, most of the time. Tompsett sings and dances with a great energy and it's fun to watch him on stage. And he works nicely with Simon-Anthony Rhoden, whose Lola is such a charming and amazing character. Lola knows ho she is, she knows how to stick for herself and she's strong. But not all the time. When Lola goes away and Simon has his turn to do things, it's not so easy anymore. Rhoden shows in a great way the "battle" or whatever between Lola and Simon. The other one is self-confident and witty, the other has insecurity that makes him weak. But they are both the same, and that what makes Lola herself, or Simon himself.
Natalie McQueen's Lauren is awesome! Lauren is my favourite character, at least in this production, and McQueen does a brilliant role. Lauren is funny and cheery, and I just love the whole scene when she sings The History Of Wrong Guys. Sean Needham does a good role, his Don is strict guy who has his opinions and he's not ready to change his mind that easily. Cordelia Farnworth is a very nice Nicola. Nicola is strong-minded, she knows what she wants and shes's ready to get it. Understudy for Charlie's role, Jordan Fox was Charlie at West End Live and I tought he would be doing the role at the show as well, but he was playing Harry, and he was very good at that role, too. And Fox sings really well, a joy to listen. Like it also is with the rest of the cast.
Kinky Boots is a charming show with lots of glitter and sparkle but also everyday life and worry about the factory's future. The story is well built and has good themes and pace, and also strong characters who have good dynamics with each other. The whole show is packed together well and it has the right amount of fun, fast scenes and a few peaceful moments, drama and comedy. The cast is great, and they're dancing in heels like pros! If only I could do that too... Well, practice makes perfect. To sum up everything, I'll just say that Kinky Boots is awesome! Really worth a visit, there are so many good things in the show that it's quite hard not to like it. And now, after seeing the show, I have so many expectations for the Finnish premiere. Can't wait to see it!
